We are just about to to decide whether to go with a swimming pool firm called Acquaform, who is very pricey, or to do it ourselves and really need some help with the way forward.

So who out there has any information regarding my big issue of buying a suitable second hand 4x4 for the rugged landscape and inclement weather??

Rolling hills and breathtaking views are great but.......Frustratingly having just bought the 'chiavetta' and using TIM and Alice has caused me lots of problems with internet connectivity, even though I've spoken to the helpline in my slightly bet

Thanks for your reply.  I looked 'swimming pool' up in the community search as you suggested and I didn't get what I needed.

The carabiniere, both of them, in the village are quite friendly and I could ask for their advice when I am in the position of buying one over there.  The Nissan sounds like the best one for us at the moment and so I am giving that one serious consideration and hope to have one by the time we return in the near future.

Thanks for your input.  It is really appreciated and something I do bank on when using this site.We have actually been looking at the Nissan X trail Aventura as you mention and now I am becoming even more sure that this is the one.  Can you get one free or for as little as possible??  I bet this site doesn't do that!!  Anyway joking aside and relistically, we have around the 9k mark to buy something around the 4/5 year mark. The Fiat Panda is the obvious 4x4 of choice around the paese but having helped a guy on the kerb recently, in no go mode, I am not too keen. During last January I flew out with my offspring, without my other half, for a white week and we hired a Renault Koleos 4x4 which was great and brand new during the first few days.  However it had an innovative strange handbraking and ignition system which I found difficult to remember to use properly especially on hill starts when the brake did not disengage when I wanted it to and did its own thing! Unfortunately snow cascading down onto the parked car from a building dented the roof  and with a 'shame face' we had to return it damaged...not in the least bit gutted I might add, since we paid the extra fully comp everything included insurance. So the lesson is....... Don't park under a overhanging snow laden roof during snow spells and  take care when in a brand new 4x4 up our 3:1 approach. Damage may  be imminent as it slips and slides against snow and hard banked up ice walls and it may not even get you up because the handbrake engages automatically for no reason!!  What a wonderful life we have chosen to live, but I wouldn't change it for the world!!Hope that Dubai holds hidden promises for you during these hard financial times (I read your profile, hope you don't mind)

We travel to Piemonte in Italy by road via Eurotunnel 4 times a year for a couple of months each time.  Our beautiful golden retriever, who is now fifteen and who doesn't look a day over 8, sits or lies with enough room to turn, in an elevated box which is behind the driver seat of our air conditioned  Renault Traffic. We find that he prefers to lean against something so that he can brace himself and he can also be seat belted in if necessary.  We constructed the area especially for  him, it is carpeted and also has his own smelly  bedding underneath him.  He manages to sleep for most of the 15 (total with stops) hour trip along the motorway through France, with 4 comfort/ drinking stops and two eating breaks .  He enjoys being close to us and also gets glimpses of the delightfully scenic French motorways! There have been no major restrictions on Eurotunnel as we pay for him to be included on our ticket and he could equally be on the back seat of a car with or without  a seat belt. The only restriction is that dogs are not allowed out of the vehicle whilst in the tunnel.  He went through the 6 month rabies medication process and has an ID chip and passport.  DEFRA rules are quite specific but our UK vet told us what we needed to know and do.  We do all the necessary medications which amount to flea/tick treatment and worming before he returns to the UK, through an accredited italian vet, whom we have got to know very well over the last two and a half years. He ends up being wormed at a very high dose every three months virtually and certainly doesn't need any more at home. He will soon need a top up rabies vaccine as the original only lasts for three years.  Whilst there is no requirement that we have heard of in terms of a dog guard I agree that driver safety is important and the dog/ your children should not be able to jump onto your lap whilst driving, but this is the case also here in England.Hope your plans go well.

Thanks for that TIM map...very useful and I've cut and pasted the bit that applies to me:Verifica se il tuo comune è raggiunto dalla copertura TIM

  • GSM (GPRS e EDGE)
  • UMTS
  • DVB-H
  • UMTS HI Speed

So what in H's name does all that mean? You won't believe me (well you might) when I tell you that I thought that I was buying a bluetooth dongle when I was advised to buy the USB key here in Italy.  My sources in England reliably informed me that all I needed was a dongle.  Difficult to know wh to trust really isn't it. Anway, water under the bridge now.  I will try and slow down my computer's speed as you suggest.I appreciate your help.Thank you

Thanks for your input..........I enjoyed the site you mentioned and Nizza is on the other side of our hill towards Asti.  We also have made some lovely Italian friends who have a summer home near Genoa and will be looking to spend a few sunny days down there taking a trip to Portofino at the same time.  It's all good.

Let me try to explain in my technically challenged way what I was advised to do in the first instance to enable my laptop to get online using a mobile system since we can't get Italia telecom or cable where we are.........Am reading the packet I bought and it says the internet key (chiavetta) ALICE MOBILE is USB key and with SIM TIM  enabled the HIGH SPEED ONDA MT503HS CHIAVETTA INTERNET, VOGLIO INTERNET 7.2 MEGA will allow me to navigate on the internet....which it does but intermittently for between 10 seconds and two  minutes each time then it disconnects itself. Why? I buy ALICE E30.00 PAYG which is supposed to give me evenings and weekends gratis for a month plus charge up my TIM card with E10.00 each month too so presumably it can dial out.  It says that it will allow me to navigate using the systems HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE and GPRS (whatever those mean).  However I've now been told by locals that we have a mast very near us but it works best using vodaphone WIND set ups and not TIM.  So infuriatingly I have wasted the E136.00 that the key cost since I now will need to buy into another contract with WIND to get better connectivity.  My question, is  there a guarantee that the connectivity will be better,  without me hanging out of a second floor window, since I don't want to waste more money?   It is quite important for me since I need to check on my UK business status on a daily basis while I am away in Italy for half the year. Also....We have a Piemonte style long, narrow farmhouse which sits idyllically on a steep hillside looking over the Bormida river at around the 400m above sea level mark.  The mast sits on the highest point of the hillside above our heads at around the 1000m mark.  Does this have a bearing on the situation?I'll try looking up past post you mention you put up on the forum if I can and that may help. Thanks

Thanks so much Adriatica and yes I will consider your suggestion, if only to avoid the year long frustration I’ve had with Alice and TIM.  But a new laptop is far more interesting….got to convince my other half though that it is obvious ours has given up the ghost!!  He’ll just say repair it…being a fanatical DIY kind of guy. Yes I agree with you about the contract. the thing is can we be sure that the mast has an  Wind dish on it? How can you identify one of those I wonder?  I expect that the nearest Vodaphone outlet will be able to advise.  Good advice about the monthly contract, but when I did  ask, the assistant seemed to think that I'd need to be tied to a year, ah!  I'd like to try and get a good deal face to face since the 119 TIM helpline can be quite confusing. For example the term for the Hash key is something to do with a a little gate thingy on the keyboard...don't ask!!  So finally I can put the E136.00 I spent on that TIM key down to good experience and the 'take advantage of foreigner' syndrome that sometimes happens here too, unfortunately.  Or perhaps I am being cynical having been burnt a little.Oh and does your repetoire include knowledge about UPVC (similar) telescopic pool covers and suppliers in and around the Cuneo region of Piemonte Thanks again   Rosi
