An alternate to ENEL. For all of us that have had enough of the confusion and pricing with ENEL - there is an option.

Has anyone seen the article in the London Times today (19 Aug) about Basilicata? I don't have a subscription to their site so will need to see if I can track down a print copy.

In our village we just verbally tell our friends that we will be attending the reception once we have received the invitation - nothing written required. We are in Basilicata and the invitaions are always hand delivered by the bride or a family member. You are also expected to give cash at the reception in an envelope (the cost of enjoying the 8 hour party)

They don't like the process. Most Italians don't have house insurance for various reasons, one is they don't like the process if they file the claim. I've heard multiple complaints with both house and car insurance that it is best not to file a claim unless it is catastrophic. Plus, with stone and concrete there isn't a lot to damage with most ruotine claims.Do you have a single building or a flat in a building? This makes a big difference in coverage and price. You might try Clements, clements.com.

You will need records. The consulate is a good place to start with details on the process. In general: you will need documents to show that your grandparents were born in Italy. Then you will need documents that complete the link to you.You will need official documents from Italy that are obtained at the comune. Email, letters and phone calls tend to get limited results from the comune. Many times you need to go there yourself or have someone local do that for you.

First I would point out that the Italian life expectancy is greater than for the US (I'm an American).Italy has problems. Punto! Every country has its own set of issues. For us, Italy is a more pleasant lifestyle, more relaxing and has much better food. Each of us has our own priorities.

As Americans applying for our visa we had the same issue and the consulates would never give a specific number. If you don't have a non-working income then you need to show that you have enough cash available to support yourselves. A couple thousand euro would probably not be enough. Unfortunately I can't give you a set figure, however, the more you can show the better.

Elizabeth,The visa allows you to enter the country for more than 90 days, once you are here you must apply for a permesso, that is what allows you to remain here. You use the same info you will use for your visa but go to the local questura. You are correct to have the cousin fill out the correct forms (they have to have the stamp and accompanied by a copy of thier carta d'identita). Once you move to Italy and get your permesso you can move to another area, you just need to notify the local questura of your address change. I would recommend you do not tell this intention to your local consulate, could be grounds for visa denial.

Did you ever get the problems worked out and moved in?

We have used the long term car park at the airport several times with no problems. If you reserve on-line you get a discount. The shuttle runs on a regular basis and never had problems with vehicle damage. http://www.adr.it/web/aeroporti-di-roma-en-/pax-fco-parking
