We'll drive from Dunkirk to Lyon (because husband has a meeting there) then onto the Sabina (Lazio). Any thoughts on the Lyon/Rome bit? Driving next week. Our ferry arrives at 9.30/10 in Dunkirk and I'd love to find a small town for lunch.

Can anyone see any reason whether an unlocked Huawei E586 MIFI modem device won't work in Italy with an Italian data SIM inserted?

If we leave our UK registered and insured car in Italy for at least 6 months, possibly up to a year, will we have to keep up the UK road tax or can the DVLA be contacted and told the car is out of the UK for a period? Thanks

We are part way through renovating a farmhouse and outbuilding in Lazio. The outbuilding is habitable now and the geometra came a few weeks ago to talk about giving the property a catastal value.

Apologies in advance for being dim about these things! I am looking for the best way of getting a PAYG/weekly subscription package for internet access.

Many thanks Ram that's really helpful. No surprises here as the UK has been following this principle for years. Out of interest, do you know what happens as regards purchase tax if 'residenza' is held in Italy for say 3-4 years, followed by a period of being 'resident' in another country  and then is resumed...or not...even if the property still exists? We are a family with internationally mobile jobs, so probably a bit unusal as we have to adapt to an unknown future all the time...hence so many questions! To those who find such questions annoying please don't reply...I've become a little nervous using this forum!

Thanks Penny. We are in total 'suspension' at the moment anyway as the plan was for me and the kids to go out ahead of my partner. Maybe it's the home in the UK we should put in his sole name I'm beginning to think in the same way that Italian married couples can legitimately have due prime case! I have no problems with paying tax totally above board (we even made a full declaration of value when we bought our casale, much to our vendor and notary's surprise!) it's just the huge complication of the system and I suspect a major drop in our letting income we rely on of our UK home if it is taxed at 40% rather than the 25% minus deductions at present. It is also the worry of what happens when we sell the UK house if it's in my name but my nominated prima casa is in Italy. I imagine the Italian tax system would demand some capital gains share...

Thanks for your reply Flip. I was just really curious as to how people were finding £60 ferry routes. Despite being in Edinburgh my local route (now Newcastle to Amsterdam as the Scottish Rossyth route sadly closed) is coming out at £390 return as opposed to the levels others mentioned on a post! To drive to Lazio (Sabina, a hour north of Rome)  can anyone suggest a good route or ones to avoid? Thanks

Thanks so much for the help! This is all really helpful. Perhaps I should explain a little more; I am a freelance classical musician and am really hoping to audition for work in Italy alongside being 'on site' with the house renovations (musicians often survive with this hybrid job combination!). We were also planning for our 3 1/2 year old to go to the village scuola infanzia so really I would be living in Italy. The fly in the ointment is that my partner's work means I'll be travelling between where he is based and Italy. This will become clearer over the next few months when we know where his next posting will be. We are told the casale renovation costs will be in the realm of €170k so not being resident at this point will also mean hugely expensive building taxes at a non-resident rate plus no access to the tax reduction (€48k over ten years?) you can claim for renovating an old derelict building in Italy. I suppose the big issue is what happens if we sell our house in London and decide to downsize to release funds at some point. In the UK it's our sole home so no capital gains but will the Italian tax office be entitled to a chunk of the profit? Seems a little unfair as if I sell in a year I will have only been an Italian resident for a fraction of the time that we've owned the UK house. Any ideas of a good, reasonably priced commercialista? Thanks again!
