Driving to Italy - Speed Cameras

07/04/2009 - 11:03

I thought it might help people not break the law [or get caught breaking it] to some info on speed cameras they might come across in driving down to Italy. [This really applies to people like me who don’t have a sat-nav that tells them all the info they need] For speed cameras in the UK, most road atlases have this detail, or you can visit http://www.speedcameramap.co.uk/  for details When driving to Italy from the UK one usually has to travel through France at some time during the journey. If you use the http://www.mappy.co.uk/  website to plan your route, it will include on the route description the location of every [fixed] speed camera that you will pass, along with the permitted speed at that pointThe http://english.controleradar.org/  and http://www.fixedspeedcamera.com/  websites contain useful info on speed cameras throughout France For speed camera locations in Belgium – you could try using http://www.fixedspeedcamera.com/index.asp?a=rf&s=&PAYS=BE  - but its not that user friendly [although there is a hand search facility (by location or road number) at the top of the page For the Netherlands http://www.flitspaal.nl/  seems to map several camera locationsI can’t find any map of Switzerland with speed camera locations – but did find this on http://www.etriptips.com/wiki/Switzerland ;-   ”WARNING: If you get fined but not stopped (like i.e. caught by a Speed Camera) the police will send you the fine even if you live abroad. In Switzerland, speeding is not a violation of a traffic code but a Legal Offence, if you fail to comply there is a good chance that an international rogatory will be issued and you have to go to court in your home country. Also, starting from 2007, Switzerland banned all GPS appliances with built-in speed cameras databases as they are equiped with "Radar Detectors". According to some GPS navigator producers, it is advised to remove the Swiss radar database while driving in the country as the police may give you a fine and impound your device even if is turned off and placed in the trunk of your vehicle! ”I don’t have much info on cameras in Italy [except the one that snapped me in a hire car near Lake Orta], or Germany – but the ‘old site’ has some stuff – including discussion on the use in Italy of average speed cameras. Hope this assists

Assist in what? Breaking the law? Why not drive in accordance with the limits.  Limits are for a reason, mainly to keep traficc safe.  Hooligans that need devises to alert on speed cameras better stay home.

Italy has average speed systems on most of its motorways now ...cannot remember the name... anyway imbedded tracking systems that calculate average speed over a certain distance... and they are pretty common... the fine gets sent to you... they dont need to stop you...basically i agree with the above post...whats the point... you gain pretty well nothing by doing even 30-40 kmph over the limit... ok if you are travelling through the night with no traffic and your car and your wallet can handle plus 100 kmph... you'll gain... but most cars are not capable of that ...even less the drivers....in my youth i used to drive for an australian camping tour company.... taking generally Aussies around europe... did it for a few years... we had these dutch mercedes coaches... with bleepers that went off when you reached rev limits.. around the 110 kmph... so over the speed limit by 10 kmph... normal coaches were limited to 90... but we had electronic braking systems that allowed the coach to go leaglly to 100...  all very boring ... the point is that travelling down say from Calais to Nice you would get overtaken several times by the same cars.... and eventually in the late afternoon you might even see them at the toll booth as you ended the motorway part.. now you couldnt go faster than 110... but they had been doing white knuckled journeys... heavely breaking when some idoit following the speed limit pulled out in front,... stops for fuel... and fearful glances at all parked cars in case they were hiding speed cameras...  only to pay fines anyway because as alan rightly said in another post even back then they had average speed systems in france... so whats the point... i set the car to do 135 here.. turn music on ...sit back and relax and arrive wherever quite happily and not a drop of sweat... those that blast past look like they are trying to tear the steering wheel off the column...and the way they grit their teeth suggest sto me that a dentist visit to renew the plates will be soon in the offing...speed kills

Dont think alans advicating speeding merely pionting out some of the helpfull sites  on the web.Mind you given all of those different sites and how many notes one would have to make to actually keep informed, it would make sence to actually buy a sat nav, not actually expensive anymore.Be  aware  its illegal to have swiss speed camera locations on one of those sat navs. But eitherway why does  "hooligans" come into it.. I don't know, Why is there always one!
