It’s called Balcone d’Italia (Balcony of Italy) and it’s considered one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Italy.

This spectacular lookout is located on top of Monte Sighignola in the Lugano Prealps, right on the border between Switzerland and Italy. Despite its relatively modest height - 1320 meters - it offers an incomparable view.

The natural panoramic terrace located at the top, hence the name ‘Balcony of Italy,’ stands on Italian territory and offers panoramic views over Lake Lugano, the city of Lugano, and the surrounding alpine landscape.  On clear days, you can see as far as some legendary 4,000-meter peaks like Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn. The Italian National Trust has rated it as one of the most beautiful places in Italy.

In 1913, the windy road that leads all the way up to the terrace was built, thanks to donations from private citizens in love with the place. The 5.5 km stretch of asphalt road is particularly appreciated by cyclists and motorcyclists. The road was inaugurated in 1914, right before World War I.

There are also several hiking paths coming from both sides of the border that lead up to the summit.

The Balcony of Italy can be reached both from Lake Ceresio and from Lake Como; in both cases, you pass through the small village of Lanzo D’Intelvi, about 20 kilometers north of Como, a real fairytale place, especially when it’s covered by a blanket of snow.

Those coming by car from Milan, which is an hour away, should take the Laghi motorway towards Como and exit at Como Nord towards Menaggio - Valle d’Intelvi. The panoramic viewpoint is only 20 minutes from Lake Como.

Parking on the top is free and there’s a bench where you can sit to admire the view.

The border line between Italy and Switzerland is placed on two different terraces; on one stands the Swiss flag, on the other the Tricolore (Italian flag).
