Reviving the Tradition of the Artisan Workshop in Florence

In the heart of the artisan neighborhood of Florence, Santo Spirito, where, since the Middle Ages, craftsmen have patiently handcrafted objects of various kinds, is a modern-day atelier trying to revive that tradition.

Called LOFOIO, the atelier organizes a series of workshops to teach people – again - how to use their hands to produce something. And because we are in the 21st century, it is not just about physical objects, but also digital ones, like 3D printers.

Once an object has been created, the association’s website explains, it is “no longer simply an object; we will remember the time, gestures and actions which made it happen.”

Workshops are led by expert craftsmen and can last from a few hours to the entire day, or even an entire weekend. The atelier provides all necessary tools and instructions on how to use them. You could learn to become a designer, a tailor or a carpenter. Groups with a common project can book the entire space.
