Italian police on Monday arrested 15 suspected terrorists believed to have links with the Red Brigades at the end of an investigation which began two and a half years ago.

The operation was coordinated by police in Milan, Padua, Turin and Trieste.

There are unconfirmed reports that a union activist was among those arrested.

The arrest warrants were issued on charges including subversion, association with terrorist organisations and illegal possession of weapons.

The investigation began in August 2004 after police discovered in a cellar subversive documents and materials which could be used for illegal activities, including ski masks, blow torches, timers and electronic components.
