Hello Badger, I think its safe to say that saying something is 'ridiculous' is not just disagreeing and rather impolite, wouldn't you think so? I think we actually share most of the same opinion on this subject but lets keep the conversation about the topic at hand, rental cars & driving in Italy. I appreciate it!

Hello Badger, I am the community manager of ITALY Magazine ;-), ciao! we do ask that these conversations remain friendly or else people won't really feel comfortable to really post what they think. You can take a look at our community guidelines stating here "You can disagree with someone's views and still be polite about it." Thank you!

Thank you for posting this long and comprehensive answer, this is a fascinating subject to me as well as an expat here in Italy and I know that personally I would never want to have renounce my citizenship because of banking issues. The local feeling here is that everyone is trying to still figure out the exact logistics,I haven't seen many bank account closures in Florence from any friends here but I know that this subject has been spoken about. Let's keep each other posted on this one..

Driving in Italy can be an experience, we tend to veer on the 'safe side' but I also know what Badger means when it comes to people not respecting rules, it almost seems like you have to speed in order to drive 'safe' sometimes. I sometimes think that everyone living here should be required to take a driving exam because signs can be different and it would be a brush up on Italian law when it comes to the road.. Just my two cents!

I was reading about this recently too and even alerted my accountant, the threshold seems to 50,000 in your bank account, correct? Hopefully with more and more news about this being made public, they will look at these laws a little better.. it just seems very rash and irrational..

Have you tried airline miles? I know some friends who have gotten upgrades this way. I found this great article on the very subject! http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/how-to-get-a-free-upgrade

I definitely agree with Alan, I have never had issues with Hertz, Sixt, Avis or Europcar. Whereas the smaller ones tend to be a whole lot shadier.

Hello Stacey,    It is definitely not difficult to rent a car in Italy, like the poster above said, you will need the international driver's permit (not everyone asks) , your license and most definitely a credit card. Make sure to ask about limited driving zones which are in italy's larger cities, you can get a large fine if you drive in the wrong area, you can ask the rental company to point that out on a map.  I wish you the best of luck! Georgette | ITALY Magazine

Hello! First of all October is a great time to come to Italy. I can definitely recommend Pepper restaurant in Rome (it's new but everything is local roman), exact address is Via Nuoro 17, 00182 Roma, Italia. I also love the recommendations of local foodie Katie Parla, she loves the following family places, Armando Al PantheonCesare al Casaletto, Settimio Al Pellegrino, Tanto Pe’ Magna’, Trattoria Dal Cavalier Gino.  Alberobello, this place is a gem, L’Aratro.  Hope that helps!
