Woodstain

I   I have a pine open-tread staircase which had been treated with a dark varnish which has become worn and scratched over the years.  I would like to remove the varnish and maybe stain the treads with a product similar to Cuprinol wood dye - I do not want to use varnish again as this just sits on top of the wood and does not soak in.  Does anyone know the name of a similar product and if so what is it called.  We have tried 'Impregnata' but this also does not seem to soak into the wood like cuprinol.  Any suggestions welcome... (Product needs to dry in a day if I'm to sleep in bed !)

From the little I know about staining floors, many [all?] wood stains don't really soak into the wood that much. If I remember correctly, you apply the stain, leave it for about 10 minutes or so, and then remove the excess with kitchen roll.  If not dark enough, you stain again after a day or so So  'Impregnata'  may have been working properly

You might find that applying a wood oil to your stairs a better bet. Danish oil is very easy to use and gives a good finish.  Linseed oil is good and pretty hard wearing.  Teak oil can be used but it is slow to dry. Don't know what the Italian is for any of the three but probably not much different from the English. Simon and Jo
