Single Motherhood on the Rise in Milan

2010 may well be remembered as the year of the single mother in Milan.

Milan’s Mangiagalli clinic, which welcomes half of the city’s newborns, has noticed an increasing trend of missing fathers. 1 in 4 women who give birth at the hospital do not indicate the father on the birth certificate.

In 2010, 27% of new Milanese mothers did not report the name of the father at birth. That is up from 7% in 2008 and 16% in 2009.

Most of the unattached mamas are of Italian origin (72.3%) and their average age is 35.

The clinic’s statistics may be raising a few eyebrows, but they show that being single in Milan doesn’t mean putting off parenthood.
