We used to use Book Depository to get books for our Italian friends at Christmas.

Book Depository now closed.  Does anyone know of an Italian (or EU) bookshop that will accept orders from the UK and deliver to an Italian address?

According to my online translation

"pipemiere"  means "pipe smith"  - hence my link to possible tobacco pipe making

"pipe miere" means "mine pipes" - hence possible link to mining.

But - who knows?????

Alternatively,  he may have worked making pipes (for smoking tobacco)  - apparently it was quite an industry at the end of 19th/early 20th Century in Lombardia.

I don't know about going through Germany/Austria,  but have you looked at going farther West, through the Simplon Pass?

The Simplon is always open, and doesn't have the 'flow restriction' that tunnels such as the Gotthard Tunnel does have.  I use it more often than the Gotthard route.

I'd play safe and get a photo driving licence.  It's pretty easy to do.

You can do it online.
