I have just planted some Kiwis. I know about male/ female plants and have planted a male between two females. I was building a support when my neighbour (the farmer from whom we bought our land) decided to help, as ever!

You have absolutely no chance in registering a car without a cert of conformity, sorry. We have just sold a UK registered car to an Italian and went through the re-registration process. It does cost around 1k as its a far more complicated process than just a change of ownership which is about €500. They have to do a cert of conformity check, they write to Swansea to check whether its stolen (and get a translation of that) they have to put it through a Revisione (Italian MOT) to make sure it complied with their regs, a notary check that everything is ok and then the change of ownership process once it has an Italian registration number (and plates). It all took about 1 month.Having said that we had the Landrover for one year and even with the cost of re-registration, we ended up with over €1,000 more than we paid for it because of the cost of second hand cars here, so it was well worth the wait

We brought our two dogs over in October, drove all the way and had them in harnesses attached to the rear seat belts. They were quite happy and so were the border controls. They love it here and, like Pauilnes above, love the lizard hunting. This is quite another subject to travelling with dogs but may be helpful. We bought Frontline to protect against ticks but found that both dogs were getting ticks as it got close to the one month "top-up" period. We have now read an article about apple cider vinegar and using that for dogs. We put a small amount in the water every day and they have not had a tick since. Its something about acidity/ alkali balance and the very slight change in aroma which puts ticks off. It is also supposed to work for us against mosquitos so we are having a go ourselves, nothing ventured...........

We have an Italian registered car, (absolutely riculously expensive for insurance), as well as a UK registered LHD car. We got the car from Damon Oorloff at www.lhdautos.com and can't praise the level of service, price, accuracy of decription and all round honesty high enough. You can insure through Stephen Williams so long as its registered in the UK but you give your Italian address for "where the vehicle will be kept" box. This insurance was about 1/3 the price for fully comp as was Italian insurance for 3rd party. We would prefer to have Italian registered cars only but don't really want to have to pay that much for insurance.

We now live on the West Coast of Calabria having moved here in October last year. We have been looking all over the Med for years and had quite strict criteria in that my wife wanted a sea view and I wanted a mountain view. I attached weather forecasts of various southern Italian towns and cities to my front page (from Google), and also looked at comparative weather charts, wind flows, etc, etc. I searched all over Google Earth and Microsoft to check for water supplies, how green it was, etc and there is also a wealth of information on the net about population sizes of sea-side towns, how much they "swell" in the summer and what sort of facilities are available. I narrowed our search down to about 75 kilometres and we found the place where we now live very easily. The main thing is that we have no regrets at all.If I were to do it again I would have done more to check how much property prices vary between Immobiliares within the same town. We got a very good price but that was more luck than judgement as far as the Immobiliare was concerned.  One of the properties we saw, which we liked, seemed a reasonable 100K for a large palazzo in our Centro Storico but we then found that the owner only wanted 80K for it and was unaware what the Immobiliare was selling it for. Having viewed through the Immobiliare I would check and meet with the actual owners and make my offer to them directly, we will certainly do that now if we but another renovation project. Don't let the Immobiliare rush you would be my main piece of advice and certainly don't be put off by the "don't you trust me, my word is my bond, my clients are my life" nonsense. (Same as UK Estate Agents really).

I have just purchased a Ryobi 50cc brush and line cutter. Buying directly from the factory saves about £50 and it comes complete with all fittings. I bought extra line and a head whilst I was at it and had it posted to our boys house. I collected when over in the UK about a month ago and it has been a great piece of kit at £150ish. I took the engine off for ease of transport and it went into the car nicely. I also bought one of their cordless strimmers which is an equally versatile tool and very handy for light work away from the house. I get about 45-60 minutes work from one charge after which its time for a gin anyway.I do a lot of woodworking and Ryobi are achieving quite a good reputation amongst fellow woodturners. Their website is atwww.ryobipower.co.uk

When you have harvested your crop do not compost or otherwise discard your potato vines/ flowers/roots, etc but rather burn them. This will destroy any bacterial presence remaining and will keep down the beetle population for the following year as they happily live in the ground all winter. I too am picking the little blighters off, its a shame they cause so much problem as they are such an attractive little beetle.

Thankyou for the assistance. By some luck my uprights are 8' high and if I add another horizantal to them my trellis will fit your suggested height of 7' with ease. You are right about Senor F, he is a great old boy and my gardening lessons are coming along much better than my Italian language ones (as I can't resist the sunshine and need to get back out there after 5 minutes of studying).

HelloWe actually use a Nationwide credit card, which is registered to our address in Italy. You get an excellent exchange rate, without any stupid charges. We also have Flex bank accounts with them, registered to our Italian address, so whether this makes a difference I don't know, but we have not encountered any problems so far and do everything on-line.Hope this helps.

We had a fairly easy time of it in Cosenza province. We are residents and the Carta D'Identita was a straightforward filling of forms, followed by a Commune police check and then a signature, about 5 days in all. The health card was applied for and granted at the administration centre for the local health authority. They had never done it before but looked it up and we had a card within a week. We have to renew every year for 5 years and then show proof that we have lived here for that time, then we get a full card. There were no questions about health insurance but we did have to show that we weren't vagrants by showing them the bank balance. One problem we did encounter which you may like to fix in advance was that our Codice Fiscale, which we had applied for when purchasing as required, was still registered to the address of our Immobiliare, as many are. It was a simple matter to change the address but it meant another visit, and queue, at the health centre after we had done it.
