Does anyone use a motorway toll tag for travel by car through France and into Italy, and if so what are your experiences and would you recommend using a toll tag? Thank you

Hi,

I'm looking for a little information or advice in relation to Gaia, the Italian utility company who supply our water.

Speeding FinesOn the journey from Lucca to the UK I incurred two speeding fines during travel through France by motorway. In each case I was travelling "up to 20km per hour" over the speed limit.

Are you driving from the UK to Italy this summer? If so, which route do you take and where do you go?

Are you driving from the UK to Italy this summer?  Which route do you take and which part of Italy do you travel too?

If i'm buying a piece of land for €3000 which adjoins my house, do I need to use a notaio?  I don't want to, but I have a feeling I might be required to.

Does anyone know if Supermarkets in France and Italy accept gift cards from UK supermarkets such as Sainsburys, Tesco etc.  I seem to have the odd gift card lying around after Christmas and just wondered if they can be used in France or Italy.

Hi Tony,How did you get on with your trip to Calabria?  Hope all went well.We travelled to Lucca on 2nd August and stayed over in Metz for one night on the way out, arriving in Lucca late on 3rd August.  We stuck to the our tried and tested route of Eurotunnel, then french motorway to Metz, then on to Colmar, through the Gottard Tunnel and down the autostrada to Milan, taking the turn for Parma and on to Lucca.  Tunnel tolls seemed to be exactly the same price as previous year.   I think the weather from Kent right through to Lucca was the hottest we've experienced since driving to Italy.

Hi Tony,Great to hear from you.  I can tell you're looking forward to your travel to Calabria - a cracking part of Italy! We usually travel Calais/Metz//Colmar staying overnight in Colmar.  We used to stay in Strasbourg but I find if we can get a little bit further south then its less driving to do the next day. We stay on the toll road all the way.  I find it more expensive but quicker, see what you think.  Personally I think the roads are in better condition too and that's not a bad thing for the tyres.  We normally arrive in Lucca early evening of the following day, just in time for a beer and pizza. We'll be travelling to Lucca at the end of July, we can't wait.   I think the holiday starts as soon as you close the car doors and turn the key to go.CheersChris

If you were staying in Parma you could pretty much take a look at Lucca, a truly beautiful city.  But, wherever we go in Italy we're bowled over by its beauty, including the places Gala mentioned.  I suspect a person could spend a lifetime travelling round Italy and still want more.

Thank you Casa and Gala.  I realise i'll need to go through the notaio, and your absolutely right, safety first.I was just wondering if either of you have feel for the notaio fees?  We paid our house purchase fees on the cadastral value rather than the contract value of the house which is quite common.  Presumably the notaio fees will be a percentage of €3000 being the contract price or some lower alternative valuation.  Presumably, there must be a minimum fee for a notaio to act, €500 euro or something?

Fantastic place Sienna and the surrounding area.  Gut feeling, I suspect you'd be able to pick up a little fiat for anything between €1500-2500 but it'll be interesting to see if anyone else on tnis forum replies with a more accurate figure.  I suppose it dependes on how new or old you want your car to be.  I've seen some pretty ancient lookiing fiats around Bagni di lucca and in the Lucca area genrally, anfd they seems to run forever.  Some of them are 20-25 years old, now they must be available at bargain prices.  If you wanteda  newish one I think i'd be inclined to go to the local Fiat dealer.  If you're not far from Sienna, I strongly recommend a day out at Monte Oliveto Maggiore.

Congratulations Emma. We would love to do that too.  We have a place overe there too, but sadly its holidays only for us at the moment, but who knows what the future may bring!  Whereabouts are you in Tuscany, we're near Bagni di Lucca.  On the Fiat 500 front , I would think you'd pick up a 3 year-old model for a very reasonable price.  I've noticed a lot more Fiat Panda's around, so there might be a better deal on those?

Actually, it costs me a certain amount in diesel to get to Italy.  I was just wondering if any of the gift cards issued by major UK supermarkets could be used to buy fuel in the same way that they can in the UK.  I have everything I could possibly want, and have some surplus cash on cards.  I was just asking a polite question as to whether anyone knew...... i'd rather spend it on fuel if it is possible, thats all.  Sorry if asking my question offended you.

I've found the area around Fontana Bianche to be quite good but its busy this time of the year.  There is a pay beach and a free beach a short distance away, surrounded by lemon groves.  the aroma on the beach is quite heady at times but only if you like lemons! Both beacheas are handy for dinner in Noto though!
