Hi everybody. i went on this website before and found out all sorts of great stuff about Abruzzo which proved to be perfect. I have booked flights to Rome for a week from 21/12 and am now wondering where's best to go. Everywhere in Rome itself seems smallish and very expensive. I thought of trying to find somewhere in Tuscany in a little town or south near Naples and then doing day trips out and about. Does Pompeii stay open in the winter. Can you get up Versuvius. We went to the Saturnia Therme with the kids one Easter and I think that would be a fab way to spend Xmas if it's open. We have 6 kids , ages 17,15,13,11,9,7 and I want them to see something different from here for a cheange.  Another possibility is that we saw some great looking ski places in Abruzzo . Is it possible to find a teacher for us as a group of beginners, hire all equipment or is that ridiculously expensive . please if you have any good ideas or have done good stuff at Christmas please let me know. Last time I found really special walks that are not easy to find in guide books . Thanks for your time and brains !! Rachel

Italy doesnt close at Christmas like other countries.  Naples is great at christmas - there is the Via San Gregorio Armeno in the heart of the old city where they sell all the presepe stuff and where theres Christmas all year round.  The Neapolitans love their Christmas, the more gaudy and kitsch the better.  Having said that Xmas in Italy isnt as commercial as other places.  In Naples there is the big meal on Christmas Eve which means everything shuts at 7pm while they cook eels.  Xmas Day is great, discos, cinemas, everything is open and after your blow out on Xmas Eve you go out and enjoy yourselves.  Pompei will be open I would think, and it should also be possible to go up vesuvius.  The weather at Xmas is usually mild, and its more an occasion to eat than to spend a fortune.

Hi RachelRegarding your intended trip to Italy, our Italian friends run an Agriturismo, 25 mins from the ski resort - Passolanciano. The resort whilst catering for the more experienced skiers, also has a learner slope which would be ideal for your needs. Their friends also run a ski business at Passolanciano and would be able to assist you.Theres a lot more to see and do besides skiing, take a look at their website to find out more.www.agriturismomontupoli.it  www.agriturismomontupoli.info They are also open all year round and welcome visitors over the festive season.Hope this helpsCiaoNigel
