Two gay men who kissed each other on the beach at Ostia were told to leave after other bathers protested, reports La Repubblica. This comes shortly after a lifeguard at Torre di Lago [Tuscany] threatened to fine a gay couple for kissing and a report of a policeman in Cagliari [Sardinia] who threatened to arrest a gay couple on Poetto Beach after a heterosexual couple complained that they were “despicable beings”.

The Mayor of Pesaro [Veneto] has initiated a “safe summer” with patrols to remove gay couples from the banks of the River Piave “because families go there”. In July a gay couple were violently attacked in Pesaro [Marche] where the gay male voice choir “Komos” , from Bologna, was prevented from appearing.

Now the gay community in Italy is demanding a law which will define homophobia as a kind of racism for which there will be penalties and, at Torre di Lago, there is to be a demonstration led by the gay Democratic Party Member of Parliament Paola Concia , Alessio di Giorgi of Gay.it and Regina Satoriana, a transsexual activist. These three will kiss their partners during the demonstration and invite members of the public to join them in a peaceful protest against homophobia.

Would you support the demonstration?
