  it's in Italian but has a lot of info about the transport network around the Livorno area: http://www.provincia.livorno.it/economia/areavasta/text/sistema.htm Livorno is 20 Km from Pisa Airport and it seems to be well connected also by train with main towns: Genova, Firenze, Pisa and Roma.

somebody travelled from the West Midlands to find a home in Puglia (deep in the South)… by motorbike! story here then why not by camper van! :) you could avoid accommodation and transport costs, plus, many places in Italy are equipped with campersites!  In bocca al lupo, wish you the best!

Yes, you're right, when you are looking for something in a big country it would be best to answer a few questions: I'm looking for a place totally different from where I live? Am I open to climate changes?  I'd like to live in a tiny village or in a big metropolis?  After you answer these and other personal questions, you may concentrate on a specific area. I know it doesn't help you a lot, but at least it is a beginning! :) good luck!
