Questions Asked

I've been dipping in and out of the Forum for months now and not really finding much of interest but today I have spent over half an hour reading all the posts- it's back to the old variety, some practical, some fun, some political, some beautiful

when we bought our villa 12 years ago, there were plans to bypass the local towns so our journey from Ciampino would be cut from 30 minutes to 15 and at peak hours from 60 to 15 minutes. 12 years on work has started, stopped, started, stopped and it is now half built and not yet in use. Biggest reason for delay is that everytime they dig, the beni e ambiente people find some archeological treasure (what a surprise) and it all has to be excavated properly. I would have it no other way but don't hold your breath for an operating airport at Viterbo for at least 10 years or more.

the local villages could be well worth the trip as Arricia for example is famous for porchetta and you could get to see how it's made - just ask. Genzano has EU protection for its bread and obviously Frascati for its wine. I think a trip out and about would be very interesting

I might be wrong but I thought Tesol was teaching English as a second language ie to people in the UK whose first language is not English. I did a Tefal course years ago (teaching English as a foreign language) and picked up employment in Rome as soon as I arrived. Celta has now appeared and seems to be an equivalent of Tefal-you'd  better check

Welcome  and lovely to hear from someone who lives in an area we would like to know better - your webpage looked really great and if we can contribute in any way, do let me know. We are fauther North, in Provinicia di Roma, Genzano i.e. the Colli Albani and unfortunately we have to keep popping back to the UK to earn a crust. We are though quite familiar with Aprilia, Latina, Anzio, Nettuno  Sabaudia and Ponza (though before it became so famous) we always recommend friends go down to Circeo or further (I love Terracina) to appreciate the beaches.

Answer to: property history

speak to the locals - we have a fantastic view of a medieval castle built on roman villa remains - we know the owner lives in Turin and can't afford to do it up and we know all about its history from the geometra who dealt with the purchase of our house. He only proferred the information because we asked as everyone else already knew.

I thought of making my own limoncello last year - but where do you get the litre of 90 percent proof alcohol? I don't see it on the shelves of the local shops

how did you get cover for earthquake damage pandc - we are near Rome and although we have buildings insurance, earthquake damage is one thing not covered

Answer to: Roundabouts?
Fri, 09/11/2009 - 14:22

we have lots of new roundabouts in the Colli, all with lovely garden or fountain displays but what a casino when there is traffic. We drive by the UK rule of he who is on the roundabout has right of way and there were lines to indicate this but they have already faded and are unclear. It doesn't help that near Ciampino there are two large roundabouts - one where you have right of way on the roundabout and one clearly marked to show you give way to the right on the roundabout. I adopt the approach go forward with confidence that you are right but be ready to brake and give way if someone seems more confident than you.

Roccaraso was a great success for my 14 year old and hubbie (I'm not a skier but the weather was great so I just walked around) . We went for a weekend from Rome but when we tried to book in advance, all the hotels wanted one week bookings. In the end, as they weren't full, we managed to get a room for the weekend by ringing them every evening.
