Questions Asked

A question for TV techies if I may. I know about getting catchup TV etc from the UK by using a VPN and this works fine to a computer.

Thanks to all who chipped in on the sweet potatoe chat a few months ago. You inspired me to plant one and now there is a 1m square of verdant bush in the orto and still spreading. It is weathering the drought really well too.

this may be a bit esoteric but I have just put up 3 updated Excel models on www.heatingitaly.com in the downloads section.  These cover panel angles with a graphical study on how fitting ove

I promised a report on the 4.6Kw PV solar car port a few months ago. The full year isn't quite up yet but the results are now pretty clear.

Just read an old post from Bunterboy with regard to solar panel angles. The accepted wisdom is to angle them the same as your latitude which is moving towards a winter bias.

Recently we went to check in a bag at the counter at Stansted and the girl there said it would cost £35 but we could do it on line for £15...

have a look at www.dishpointer.com which gives all the popular sats for Italy (see below) and also tells you where to point your dish from your house complete with skew. 1. 13E EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 13A | EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 13B | EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 13C 2. 19.2E ASTRA 1H | ASTRA 1KR | ASTRA 1L | ASTRA 1M | ASTRA 2C 3. 10E EUTELSAT 10A 4. 9E EUTELSAT 9A | EUTELSAT KA-SAT 9A 5. 16E EUTELSAT 16A   28.2 is where the ASTRA satellites are shown but I suspect they have moved and the web site not updated. Wasn't Astra decomissioned for a while?

.... looks like you are the only one with a techie solution and thanks for the reply.  I'm going to test a spin off from heating controls which might save you the €700 annual fee.  Basically its a home automation module that is radio linked to everything like window triggers, movement sensors, cameras, wi-fi, lights etc etc and the whole cost would be about the same but a one off with no annual fees. The beauty is that you can compose your own scripts.  Eg  if outside sensor activates + I am in = flash inside light briefly ( a guest arrival notice)   also if outside sensor activates + I am out = text me and show pictures on i-phone.  Similarly inside sensors can turn on lights and double as alarms to give flashing of all lights and phone calls etc ... basically whatever you can dream up.  I might find it is still a bit nerdy for general consumption but things are moving on.  I would hate to be an alarm system vendor right now as this is a killer app.

My young son lives on a Marmite diet (supplemented with chocolate) and seems to be unaffected by bitey things of any sort while the rest of us get attacked as usual.

I'm wondering if there is a predominant system used in Italy and roughly what sort of cost one might expect.  Also the level of sophistication ... such as cameras shown on i-phone, text alerts and more.   Thanks.

There is a raft of past heating chat on heating on this forum.  However to reset the parameters a bit: The Gas or pellets  you are considering are expensive and IMHO gas boilers and pellet stoves are on their way out ....   wood, solar and heat pumps are at the economical and ecological end of the spectrum.  To clarify a bit:  take a small air source heat pump (ASHP) consuming the same power as an electric kettle but producing 3 kettles worth of energy, all with minimal maintainance .... it is really hard to for gas and pellets to compete with such a proposition.... I know I'm just considering a small ASHP, but topped up with wood and solar it is easy to install on a single phase supply and makes for a super cheap- to-run system that is as green as Kermit too.  That's not to say you couldn't just have a bigger heat pump system and nothing else.

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/clarke-cpf13-electric-power-file the air powered ones are best but without a compressor as well one of these electric jobs will have those rads smoothed out in no time.

... as a disinterested observer I can tell you that this is a really good offer ... the cast iron ones are the most expensive ones you can get.  If restoring them I'd fettle them a bit more with an air linisher then paint with Hammerite which is hugely wear resisitant.
