Monte dei Paschi is probably considered as Italy's premier bank. A cheque drawn on an account with them will almost certainly be taken as cash.

As I understand, Ryanair's business model is based upon a rapid turnaround of their aircraft. Landing charges are almost secondary despite what may published in the press.  If an airport cannot deliver a fast changeover then this will throw out their schedule. I believe this was the reason they pulled Calabria and why Pisa may be a problem.

You will need a very large dish. 2.5m plus and even then its not guaranteed that you will receive a strong enough signal. Plus a dish of that size can easily be knocked out by high winds. You could consider changing to Sky Italia. You receive around 20 channels broadcast in English, sky news, bbc prime etc but not BBC123, ITV123etc. SKY UK broadcasts on Astra while SKY Italia is on the hotbird satellite.

myabruzzohome gives very good advice about sandblasting bricks. Your operator has to be very skilled otherwise you run the risk of permanently damaging your bricks. As a guide expect to pay something around €15- €20 per m2 for gouging out of old material (to depth of about 6mm) and repointing.

Sorry, should read...the pound has fallen by almost 40%.

Italian tax rates are higher than the UK.Current rates:€0-15000  23%€15001-28000  27%€28001-55000  38%€55001-75000  41%€75001 and over  43%Regional and municipal taxes can add a further 2% to these bands and and an employees contribution to social security is around 10% (equivalent of NI).But, since the introduction of the euro, the pound has fallen by almost 30%. If you think only in terms of sterling then Italy has become much more expensive on a day to day basis but for anyone owning property and earning a living in Italy its not obvious that in purely financial terms they have done worse throughout this period compared to someone working and living in the UK.

"The main clientele in the Italian market are middle-class British families, well-heeled Americans, Germans and Scandinavians"I don't think so.

I think the problem could be that to properly seal cotta tiles it really takes an industrial polisher. No matter how much elbow grease you use, its not going to be enough. Certainly not to cope with oil stains. Fila products are very good (maybe the best) but to give a surface that will last and be durable for a couple of years you really have to use a machine. Its not cheap to employ a professional cleaner, but in the long run it could be the best solution. (Or replace your tiles for a "glazed" product).
