So the first Pope to stand down; blames it on poor health (in mind and body) .... so nothing to do with the financial scandal about to hit then?

A very interesting but disturbing article, how many other Italian cities could follow, we all know it's bad here.

I think I need to get this off my chest, as it bugs me no end on this Forum/Community site. Now we all agree that this site exists for primarily the English speaking Ex-Pat community right; and by English speaking I mean just that not differing to

As Allan says Pellet stoves can be noisy so look at them in action beforehand. We (and our neighbours) have a Pallazzetti Pellet stove (two different sizes) and find them one of the best makes for reliability and noise. A friend of ours chose a cheaper option (can't remember the name) and after about a month the noise from the fan became very intrusive. Very little ash is generated so cleaning only takes a 5-10 minutes in the morning. You also need to get them serviced/deep cleaned at intervals as they have an internal clock/timer that starts reminding you of service intervals and if you exceed that amount of usage it will refuse to start until it has been reset.

Like Fillide we have TI/Alice ADSL and for the past 3 years we have had no complaints over bandwidth and service. But bare in mind your Bandwidth depends on how far you are away from the exchange so if they say 7meg then if you're 10k or so away from the exchange expect it to be around 1 meg when it reaches you. Also we have the Free  Europe calls for €10/month, but don't make calls last longer than 60mins, hang up and redial, or you will get charges heavily for the period over 60mins. This last bit probably only applies to the female section as us men rarely stay on the phone for any longer than is necessary. LOL..

Get a Wood Burner...ours uses approx 1 large load over the winter (€150) and heats two floors of our house. We also have a small pellet burner which take 1 bag every other day (€4.70 a bag) which we use to heat the bottom two floors when not cooking in the kitchen. But make sure your house is insulated and draughty doors sealed. Be smug and use sustainable energy...

I hope Alan, if you are miles from Police I hope you are close to a Hospital, spreading 'Night Soil' on the land has been a risky pastime for centuries, and with our modern 'Cleanliness' and anti biotics we are now more susceptible to the effects of Pathogens than ever, as lotan says. Eaters Beware, I would not fancy any of your tomatoes....

Gala it is not entirely correct what you said about Lucca; they have forbidden any NEW none Italian restaurants/takeaways being opened within the City Walls. There is still a kebab shop, Chinese and Lebanese restaurant to my knowledge and I think one or two other 'non Italian' restaurants within the Walls.

'As regards to food,in Central Italy there is very little choice and all virtually the same taste whether you go to  a cheap or expensive restaurant' I beg to differ Badger old mate, but if you are referring to all central regions as the same then you need to eat out more. Around us in Tuscany we have fabulous Italian restaurants with a mouthwatering selection of home made dishes and Pasta to die for. We also have within an hours drive Japanese, Thai, Indian, Chinese oh and a MacDonalds. Italian regional cooking especially out of the Cities is beyond compare in our book, and my wife is from Napoli and she is a harsh critic.

Dear Dear...quote 'Yes I am British and of course I shouldn't use the same brush for all Brits there are I am sure plenty who can meet my expectations.' Lotan, I have come across some pompous and opinionated buffoons in my time, but you are in line for taking the  Garibaldi.....

Actually Ram that was meant to be figuratively speaking (as the Agent is advertising the property for Sale). I know only too well that Italians will 'demand' a price which has absolutely no basis on market value at all, merely based on the fact that that is the figure they want for the property and that's an end to it; and no amount of reasoning will change that, especially if the property has been inherited.
