Europe Celebrates Artisan Gelato Day

Europe is getting ready to celebrate the second edition of European Artisan Gelato Day, when thousands of gelaterie across Europe will create a special flavor – the same for all of them - to offer their customers on March 24, the day of the event.

The flavor chosen for this year’s edition is “Stracciatella d’Europa” (European stracciatella): milk-based (fior di latte) gelato with chocolate and orange juice. The flavor has been picked to remember the gelato chef who invented the stracciatella flavor, Enrico Panattoni, who passed away last year. The story goes that one night in 1953, he came up with stracciatella by blending the freshness and delicacy of cream with the strong taste of dark chocolate, creating a flavor that is still one of the most beloved today.

European Artisan Gelato Day was established on July 5, 2012 by the European Parliament with the intent to celebrate and recognize the value of artisan gelato.

The Stracciatella d’Europa flavor will be sold at 1 euro in thousands of ice-cream parlors.

To celebrate the occasion, the Gelato Museum in Anzola dell’Emilia (Bologna) will have two special openings on Sunday 23 and Monday 24 and will offer free guided tours when buying a gelato at the adjacent Carpigiani Gelato Lab.

A hashtag for the event, #gelatoday, will give the chance to share opinions, photos and videos on social media, and at the end of the day, a collective story will be put together from all the posts that have been shared.
